everywhere i looked, there were lesbians .... (when i lived in Oakland)
i thought it was just me.
after living 11 years in Oakland, one day i thought to myself, why is it everywhere i look i see lesbians? i thought it was just my imagination. i recently confirmed that it isn't just me, haha, i heard it from a pastor and i saw evidence in a store--there was a t-shirt that said "Oakland is Dyke Town" and it also had a picture of two butch lesbians kissing. Joey and i were talking today and i shared this new knowledge with her, she didn't know either. so i went online to look into it, lo and behold, in the entire US Oakland has the most lesbians per capita. Oakland is #1!! Oakland also ranks #3 for most homosexual residents, behind SF and Seattle.
who knew? how did i not know that for all this time. i guess it's cuz i don't have any lesbian friends. the lesbians that i do know have not informed me they congregate in Oakland either. i'm not raising any particular point here, im just astounded at how i didn't know.
now that i said that, you are probably thinking the same thing "ah....no wonder i see so many lesbians around here, i thought it was just me"
according to the article that i just read, the most concentrated amount of lesbians live around the Oakland Hills near Mills College and around Rockridge. that is a nice area i must say, i'd want to live there too. i used to walk dogs for some lesbians that lived there, didn't realize it was a popular spot. though it is quite well known that Mills is a popular school for lesbians to go to.
ever since i moved to Fremont, i haven't seen a lesbian other than at work--at least not ones that i could tell were lesbians. well of course you can't just assume someone's sexual orientation but there are some obvious signs like obvious flirting and PDA with their girl friend. the people at work, i actually can never tell if they are gay or straight, and it doesn't help that they all refer to their significan other as their partner. it took a long time for me to confirm who was gay and who was straight, so yeah, i guess assuming really doesn't work so well, but then people act differently at work versus when they are on a date with their significant other. just looking at a person's dress and behavior when they are alone it is pretty hard to tell if they are gay or not, it is easiest to see when someone is with their lover. i blame it on the metrosexual men that act and dress like the sterotypical gay man. i met someone who was like that, he was like, i have to make it clear i am not gay, everyone keeps thinking i am gay. he was really cute. i've also met lots of coworkers that totally confused me, like men who did not dress or act anything like the sterotypical gay guy and i would find out that they had a boyfriend, or coworkers that dressed and acted TOTALLY like a very butch dyke and turns out she is not even bi, she only likes men. who would have thunk. ok you probably think i am being a prejudice, presumptuous jerk, but you have to meet these people. there was no way that i could have guessed the correct answer. i guess it just goes to show, you can never tell.
